Interlogica "Big Picture": an Event Storming workshop

10 February 2025 · by Interlogica

Imagine more than 500 sticky notes, ideas flying around, teams working together and a shared vision taking shape.
Recently, at Interlogica, we immersed ourselves in an Event Storming workshop to draw, together, the “Big Picture” of our company.
Guided by our colleagues Massimo Naccari and Oscar Chinellato, we mapped our current system.

It was one of those rare occasions when ideas really meet.
We gathered around a wall full of coloured sticky notes to do something that often seems impossible: draw complexity together.
It was not just a working day, but a moment of collective discovery, an opportunity to question “it has always been like this” and build “this is how it could be”.

This shared space created new connections, making our company system not only clearer but also more human.

An Event Storming is much more than a simple workshop: it is a collaborative experience that involves all the key people of an organisation in shaping a shared understanding of the business system.
The goal is to solve critical problems and outline new opportunities, laying the foundations for more aware decisions.

Goals of the workshop

If understanding the system is the crucial ingredient for choosing promising solutions or implementing the right software, then learning as much as possible before wasting money on the wrong initiatives is the right way to go.

The Big Picture Event Storming was designed to:

  • Build a behavioural model of an entire line of business, highlighting the collaborations, boundaries, responsibilities and perspectives of the people involved.
  • Identify the most urgent problem to solve, avoiding wasting time and resources on unpromising initiatives.

The value of a visible model

When you try to reach consensus on system problems, the complexity is often too high to be understood and handled verbally, in your head.
Without a visible, shared model, we cannot be sure that the different parties involved are talking about the same thing.

Talking about business processes is one thing; seeing them take shape before your eyes is another story.

Creating a visible, shared model allowed us to:

  • Get everyone on the same wavelength, avoiding misunderstandings and ambiguity.
  • Explore problems and opportunities with a tangible, structured approach.
  • Make hidden connections visible, turning complexity into operational clarity.

“When you draw something, you make it real. When you draw a problem, you are already making it smaller.”

The event in numbers

👥 22+ Interlogici: brilliant minds who brought unique perspectives from different areas of the company.
🎤 2 facilitators: skilled at turning complexity into clarity.
⏳ 1 day of total immersion, dedicated to bringing out ideas and solutions.
📝 500+ sticky notes: a mosaic of insights, connections and valuable ideas.

Key success factors

  1. Collaboration and communication
This workshop was a place to break down barriers between departments, encouraging a dialogue that gave everyone a voice. Ideas, opinions and points of view found room, creating fertile ground for a shared understanding.

  2. Overview and process analysis
Drawing the company timeline together was not just useful, it was illuminating.
Every activity was questioned, every problem revealed.
This allowed us to identify pain points and imagine solutions that had previously seemed out of reach.

  3. Active participation and an iterative approach
It was not a static exercise: it was a dynamic laboratory. Writing, moving and rearranging the sticky notes turned every participant into a protagonist, making the experience engaging and meaningful.

Conclusions

The “Big Picture” was not just an Event Storming workshop (case study in Italian), but a journey towards a deeper understanding of the company system.
It showed how collaboration, supported by visual tools and an iterative approach, can be a powerful catalyst for innovation and improvement.

In the final phase we focused on:

  • Identifying the root causes of the problems.
  • Measuring their impact on the company’s areas and on the working climate.
  • Developing SMART action plans to put the solutions into practice.

Now we are ready to turn theory into action!
Our vision for the future is to become a more agile, cohesive organisation, focused on continuous improvement.
