Interlogica's Big Up! in "La Cerniera": the nudge that makes a difference

17 February 2025 · by Interlogica

Good ideas leave a mark. And this time the mark is in black and white.
We are delighted that Big Up!, our product designed to encourage people’s active engagement, is cited in the book La Cerniera: la spinta gentile al servizio della sostenibilità (“The Hinge: the gentle nudge at the service of sustainability”, in Italian).

Written by Irene Ivoi, La Cerniera explores how nudge theory can guide change, encouraging more aware and sustainable behaviour.

The concept, developed by the economists Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein, rests on the idea that people can be encouraged to make better decisions through small suggestions or changes in the context in which they act, without obligations or impositions. A nudge is a mechanism that steers choices naturally, using behavioural psychology to make the desirable options more likely.
This approach has been applied successfully in many areas, from energy saving to public health.

La Cerniera analyses the potential of the nudge in the world of work and corporate sustainability, showing how small incentives and changes in the work environment can lead to great transformations, improving the wellbeing and efficiency of organisations.

This is exactly where Big Up! finds its place: it is cited in the second chapter, “La spinta gentile (il nudge): un irresistibile suggerimento comportamentale” (“The gentle push (the nudge): an irresistible behavioural suggestion”).

So what is Big Up!?

It is a solution designed precisely to create a virtuous engagement mechanism within organisations. With an approach inspired by gamification and by the principles of the nudge, Big Up! encourages collaboration, innovation and active participation, turning every interaction into an opportunity for collective growth and generating a positive impact on organisations.

What does this mean in practice? Through a system of mutual recognition, Big Up! lets colleagues give each other positive feedback, helping to build a more inclusive, motivating and cohesive work environment.

Companies that adopt Big Up! put up a number of positive tokens every week or month, which everyone who has downloaded the app can give to thank a colleague.

This is how the book describes Big Up!:

“…all this, beyond the advantages it brings to management (such as gathering information more quickly), is conceptually very close to the nudge for more than one reason: it improves interpersonal relationships with feedback that is only positive and never a reproach, it triggers listening to others (a necessary act) and, with the download of the app, it activates pre-engagement.“

A necessary change

At a time when hybrid work, organisational wellbeing and sustainability are at the centre of company strategies, tools like Big Up! show that small gestures of recognition can make a difference.

The nudge approach helps improve company culture without forcing it, making change natural and sustainable over time.

The value of Big Up! lies precisely here: turning recognition between colleagues into a habit and creating a more positive and inclusive work climate. Among the most evident benefits:

  • Greater engagement and motivation of teams.
  • Better collaboration, including among those who work remotely.
  • Shorter distances between departments, thanks to a continuous feedback mechanism.
  • A concrete impact on company wellbeing, through personalised rewards and incentives.

A push for the future

Being cited in La Cerniera confirms that the road we have taken with Big Up! is the right one.
The combination of technology and gentle nudges can really improve the way people collaborate and relate to each other within an organisation.
And us? We will keep developing tools that make work more fluid, inclusive and sustainable.
